Škoda Auto has a long tradition in motorsport. Even the founders of the company, Laurin and Klement, sought comparison in sporting challenges on the roads or dirt tracks. The brand leads its competitors successfully in various rally series at national and international level.
Škoda Auto has designed the RS series for civilian use, full of sporting dynamic and fascinating agility. The Škoda Octavia RS is supplied with these letters in both hatch and estate version. Depending on choice, it can be supplied with a petrol or a diesel engine. The performance provided by the diesel scarcely lags behind that of its petrol brother (147 kW/200 HP). From its two litre capacity, the new direct injection engine with common rail technology with its 125 kW (170 HP), provides acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 225 km/h (petrol engine: 7.3 seconds, 240 km/h). The engine provides peak torque of 350 Nm at 1,750 revs thus providing an enormous torque. At 2,500 revs the power remains constant. The engine is fitted with a maintenance-free diesel particulant filter as standard and with a two-way catalytic converter und remains well below the limits of EU 4 exhaust gas standards.
Common rail direct injection is among the most demanding technical solutions in high-tech engine construction. With injection pressures of up to 1,800 bar, it guarantees the finest form of fuel atomization in the combustion chamber and thus a harmonious and rapid combustion. Several injections per tact are possible leading to an effective reduction in pollutant emission as well as a "soft" combustion. In comparison to fuel pump injection, this provides smoother running a pleasant noise level and less vibration. The engine develops its power without the normal rapid increase in the torque curve as in the case with injection pump versions and this, in turn, leads to a higher level of driving comfort without, however, any decrease whatsoever in the sporty performance.
The direct shift gearbox (DSG) gives the Škoda Octavia RS even more agility. The automatic, double shift transmission changes gear without interrupting the propulsive power. Transmission pauses as in the case of standard automatic gearboxes are eliminated. The Škoda Octavia RS with DSG, provided as an option, accelerates as if propelled from a catapult. Thus, DSG has an advantage over the well-known converter automatic transmission where the degree of effectiveness is considerably lower and which leads to higher fuel consumption. In the basic version, power is transmitted to the front wheels via a manual six-speed gear.
The red-coloured brake callipers on all the RS models is a strengthened version providing the excellent braking and stability necessary for the high level of performance of the Škoda Octavia RS. A sporty chassis with firmer shock absorbers guarantees excellent and safe driving and, in comparison to the series model, the chassis is 12 mm lower. Visual characteristics are the 17- or 19-inch Zenith alloy wheels, a sporty stainless steel twin exhaust pipe, spoiler integrated in the bumper and - in the hatch - a spoiler on the boot, improving grip at high speeds.
Although the Škoda Octavia RS is a sporty car, this by no means deters from its usefulness in daily life. Reliability, good comfort and outstanding driving performance take the occupants of the Škoda Octavia RS quickly and in a relaxed manner to their destination, combined with a considerable portion of driving pleasure.
