The new Skoda Fabia has a powerful, dynamic and self-assured look. Its front view is friendly but not playful, the emphasis of the clearly more massive and more salient form of the radiator grille gives it the typical Škoda face of the brand and classifies it clearly as a member of the Škoda family. The design of the bodywork is modern and does not lose any of its self-assured, powerful presence. The new Skoda Fabia presents itself in a new youthful, fresh appearance and wishes to appeal to younger target groups than those of its predecessor, without, however, disappointing the older, somewhat more sedate driver. More pronounced side lines and wheel housings place the car squarely on the road, the rear with its lights in the C design make it clear from behind even at night that it is a Škoda. As with the previous generation, the new Skoda Fabia comes only as a 5-door hatchback. Thanks to meticulous studies in the wind tunnel and to comprehensive fine work in detail, its bodywork exhibits a drag coefficient of cw 0.33, a value which represents an impressive result for a car in the small vehicle class. The highly successful estate version, the Skoda Fabia Combi, followed shortly after the introduction of the hatchback as a new model in the autumn.
In spite of its modest growth in size and an improved standard specification, the new Skoda Fabia is scarcely heavier than its predecessor. The overall length has increased by 22 mm to 3992 mm and its height by 47 mm to 1498 mm. The width of the vehicle remains practically unchanged at 1642 mm. In spite of all this, the basic 1.2 HTP model is 5 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. There are practically no limitations involved when on a journey or when transporting articles in the new Skoda Fabia. The vehicle payload for all EU models is a uniform 515 kilograms, a truly record-breaking value. The boot capacity is 300 litres in volume when the rear seats are in place and when folded down, the capacity increases to 1163 litres.
Skoda Fabia
The new Skoda Fabia's dimensions makes it ideally suited to town driving. The greatest increase in size in the Skoda Fabia is found where it adds comfort and doesn't compromise handling. The total increase in length amounts to 22 mm and has been created by the measures involving pedestrian protection in the front bumper and modifications to the rear bumper. These have led to a more favourable classification in insurance ratings. The increased height is mainly intended to improve the space available in the interior. Seating conditions, especially in the rear, are correspondingly much more comfortable. The driver and front passenger, for example, now sit 30 mm higher than in the first generation Skoda Fabia, affording a better view of the road. Once again Škoda Auto underlines its claim of building "simply clever" automobiles.
Parallels to the Roomster
The new Skoda Fabia follows the new Škoda Auto design ethos first demonstrated with the Škoda Roomster. Characteristic of this is the trademark radiator grille, which is now even more sculptured the large headlights reach far back into the front wings, and the stylish and clearly visible indicator lights not only create the prerequisites for safety but also give the Skoda Fabia an exceptional characteristic trait. The expressive profile of the vehicle also originates from the grille, extending along the vehicle above both doors to the rear. This character line is typical of the new five-door compact car from Škoda.
Always a good rear view: here, the function is the result of the form
In comparison to its predecessor, the rear window has become considerably larger, making the Skoda Fabia appear more spacious. In addition, this improves visibility considerably, and together with the large external rear mirrors, the new Skoda Fabia offers its driver an exceptionally good view. The rear lights are now more pronounced and sporty. In addition, they have been installed at a higher level, making them visible for the following traffic. The fact that they are mounted higher minimises the extent to which the rear lights are dirtied by unclean road surfaces, a fact which was evidenced in wind tunnel tests during the development.
The expression of an individual and more sporting orientation in the new Skoda Fabia is the exceptional new paintwork option for the roof. With this option, Fabia customers can choose a white roof, an element that will doubtless add to the car's appeal. In combination with selected external colours, the Skoda Fabia, thanks to the contrast of the roof, will look more striking than ever before.
In the recent history of Škoda Auto, the Fabia has always been a integral to the model programme and has considerably supported the impressive success of the brand. The second generation Skoda Fabia underlines this important role with its mature design. On the one hand, it addresses loyal customers of the range and, at the same time, attracts interest from new groups of buyers with its style and practicality.
A GREAT DEAL MORE: THE FABIA IS THE MOST SPACIOUS CAR IN ITS CLASS
The new Skoda Fabia is heading for the starting line with several records. It offers its occupants the largest knee and head space in this segment. And, in addition, it is the best in its class in boot space. When the rear seats are folded down the boot provides 1,163 litres of luggage space and with all 5 seats occupied, 300 litres of luggage space, giving it one of the largest boots in its class. This volume simply underlines the fact that comfort and space were of the highest priority in designing the interior.
Emotional but nevertheless with a high degree of functionality, interior design in the new Skoda Fabia is a success. The logical and self-explanatory operating concept and the ergonomic positioning of the controls in combination with carefully selected materials lead to a high-quality feel inside the cabin. All of the surfaces are constructed of or coated with materials that are pleasant to the touch and exhibit an excellent optical impression so that everyone will love the feel of the new Skoda Fabia. Thanks to the careful choice of high-quality materials and the generous amount of interior space the occupants in the Skoda Fabia feel as if they are in a vehicle of a higher class.
More emphasis has been placed on the design of the interior than was the case in the first generation Skoda Fabia. The twin-coloured instrument panel design with its storage compartments and spaces, aux-in socket, cup holder, etc, the design of the functional elements and fittings of a high standard make the Skoda Fabia more than just a practical car for daily use. It affords the car style and charm, paired with the simply clever fittings which are always found in a true Škoda.
In comparison to the first generation, the new Skoda Fabia offers much more comfort in daily driving. The boot is practical not only as a result of its exceptional capacity. The boot cover can be positioned at two different levels, which increases the variability even further. Further innovations are the armrest between the front seats adjustable in angle; the holder for 1.5 litre bottles in the front doors and the storage space for spectacles in the roof. There are three different steering wheels available for the Skoda Fabia. The basic model is equipped with a four-spoke steering wheel of a polyurethane plastic that is pleasant to the touch. On request, a leather coated steering wheel with four spokes can be supplied, while the sports version has a three-spoke leather-wrapped sports steering wheel. Leather steering wheels are always part and parcel of the small leather package which also includes the gear knob and gaiter, as well as the handbrake handle.
The safe and comfortable operation of the mobile phone and audio system via the new multi-function module on the steering wheel is already well known from the Roomster. This allows the radio to be operated, including radio station choice or volume control, without taking your hands from the steering wheel. In the case of versions equipped with a built-in hands-free phone system. The major mobile phone functions can be carried out remotely from the steering wheel.
In the centre console, the controls of the optionally available, electronically controlled Climatronic air-conditioning is located below the generous air vents which can be set exactly as required. This automatically ensures that the pre-programmed temperature in the interior of the car is constantly maintained. Below this, there is the audio system; two different radios - Beat and Dance - are available for the Skoda Fabia. As an optional extra a navigation system is available. Instructions are given in spoken form and also in the Maxi-DOT Display which displays the same information as the audio unit. The optional 6-CD autochanger is installed under the glove compartment in the lower part of the dashboard and ensures rapid access as well as easy changing.
Occupants of the Skoda Fabia will find their correct seat position without any effort whatsoever thanks to the generous adjustment possibilities. By means of the precise adjustment for the steering wheel which can be adjusted for both reach and rake, the driver can very easily find the best seating position. Even better stability is found in the optional sports seats. Bolsters on the base and back provide more support in curves even when a sporty driving style is chosen. As an option, there is also a partial leather interior, in which the seats are upholstered in a combination of leather, artificial leather and fabric. An adjustable armrest between the front seats is installed as standard in the range of fittings for the Elegance, making travelling in the Skoda Fabia even more pleasant.
There are a large number of storage facilities in the Skoda Fabia. A storage space on the left below the steering wheel is part of the standard equipment and there are holders for large bottles of up to 1.5 litres in the doors. Further, smaller integrated storage spaces are found in the dashboard, while storage in the centre console with its slip-proof base provides space for items in daily use and the rear of the front seats contain large pockets for magazines or travel guides can be easily stored. The rear seatbacks can be folded forward to provide an increase in the boot space of up to 1,163 litres. In the basic version, the Classic, the back of the rear seat is a single unit while in all other versions it is 60:40. This in turn creates an almost completely level loading surface. Between the wheel housings, the loading space measures 958 mm. The length of the boot measures 703 mm or 1383 mm when the seats in the rear are forward folded. The height from the floor to the boot cover amounts to 525 mm and to 278 mm when the boot cover set in lower position. The boot cover can be set at two different heights, varying the boot capacity. It can either be installed flush with the upper edge of the rear seat back or some 10 cms lower in a special second mounting provided for this purpose. Instead of the recessed grip normally provided in the inside of the rear door, Škoda provides a much more functional solution - a handle making it easier to pull down the tailgate.
As an option, the new Skoda Fabia can also be equipped with a large tilting sun roof. The glass window makes the interior bright and friendly. In the event that the sun's rays become too strong, the glass roof can be covered with a sliding hood. Four grab handles, two jacket hooks at the rear, two reading lights and a makeup mirror in the sun visor are supplied in the Overhead Package I which is offered for the Ambiente, Sport and Elegance versions. To protect the car against theft, Škoda also offers an alarm unit. The combination of interior monitoring and an inclination sensor reacts not only when an attempt is made to break into the car but also when an attempt is made to tow the car away or load it onto another vehicle.
EQUIPMENT
The new Skoda Fabia presents a wide variety of equipment with four different trim levels. Each of these have carefully compiled and coordinated safety and comfort properties, while a comprehensive choice of optional equipment makes it possible for the Skoda Fabia owner to achieve a high level of individuality. Curve halogen projector headlights and cornering front fog-lights, cruise control, a cooled glove compartment and a high-class audio system with an integrated navigation system or a mobile navigation system in cooperation with ViaMichelin, numerous other optional extras are available.
The basis is formed by the Classic, where emphasis has been placed on maximum functionality and safety at a favourable price. The higher trim levels - the Ambiente, Sport and Elegance - offer additional elements of comfort and, in addition, cater for the different wishes of customers with their particular interiors and exteriors.

In the Classic, Ambiente and Sport versions, the new Fabia runs on the comfort-oriented wheels of 13" and 14" and on the sporty 15" dimensions. The attractive wheel covers are specially designed to suit the design of the model. For the petrol models there are the 13" (wheel cover: PLUTO) or 14" steel wheels available (wheel covers: DRACO and CASTOR). 15" steel wheels (wheel cover HERMES) are standard for vehicles with a 1.9 TDI PD diesel engine and for all Skoda Fabia Sport versions. The Fabia Elegance has alloy wheels as a standard. In the case of the petrol engine versions and the three-cylinder diesel engine versions, 14" wheels in ATIK design are standard, while the 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW (105 HP) diesel engine is supplied with 6.0J x 15" ANTARES alloy wheels. In addition, there are numerous choices in the alloy wheel programme.
Fine differentiation: design dependent upon the equipment
The differently equipped versions of the new Škoda Fabia do not only differ in the amount of equipment provided. The higher equipment versions, Ambiente, Sport and Elegance, also differ in design as a result of the more elaborate details. For example, the base model has black exterior mirrors and door handles; in the higher versions, these components are body-coloured the upper trim and frame of the radiator grille is chromed, while the A-pillar cover emphasises the cockpit design. In line with this, the B-pillars are also in black. B-pillars on the basic version, to co-ordinate with the black mirrors and door handles, have a matt finish, whilst the B-pillars in the Ambiente, Sport and Elegance are finished in gloss black.
Similar to the manner in which the basic and higher trim levels differ in their exteriors, the execution of the interior of the Škoda Fabia is also suited to its equipment level. Even in the entry-level version, two different interior colour schemes are available. The Classic is supplied with the Onyx/Onyx dashboard. In this, there are two open glove compartments on the front passenger's side. The surrounds of the air vents, gearshift and the handbrake button are executed in black. In the case of the higher-level versions, the glove compartments have lids and individual details of the interior are optically highlighted with a silver-coloured surround. In total, there are nine different upholstery designs and partial leather interior and high-quality sports upholstery are offered as options.
Your own favourite programme: the optional equipment
The range of optional equipment offered in the new Fabia is very comprehensive. Most of the elements can be ordered separately and without having to be combined with another item. A large number of possibilities are thus created, giving each Skoda Fabia its own individual character suited to its owner's tastes. The list also contains a number of exceptional details which are completely new in this class of vehicle and many of them are being offered for the first time ever in the Skoda Fabia range. These include such things as the halogen projector headlights with their rotating headlight function, the front fog lights with the cornering light function or tyre pressure monitoring (TPM).
In comparison to the first generation, the new Skoda Fabia offers some completely new safety standards, such as head airbags which protect front seat occupants in the event of a side impact. Among the further innovations are electronically controlled air-conditioning, Climatronic, the GSM telephone preparation with Bluetooth technology, the switches for the operation of the audio unit and mobile phones next to the steering wheel or audio units with the possibility of connecting an MP3 player or an iPod via the aux-in connection in the centre console.
Good sound with information: the audio and navigation systems
The entertainment and information system in the new Skoda Fabia is based on what has already proven its worth: the audio and navigation systems are in line with those offered in the Škoda Roomster. The styling is integrated into the instrument panel and the interior as a whole. This not only enhances the aesthetic value of the interior, but simultaneously reduces the risk of theft. The electronic coding for the radio is also designed to act as an additional form of security. The offer in infotainment systems for the Škoda Fabia consists of two different radios, a separate CD changer and a navigation device with arrow direction display.
The Beat car radio is the basic system for the new Škoda Fabia. It is in 1 DIN format and receives both AM and FM as well as being fitted out with an RDS function. The CD changer can be controlled from the radio and amplifier power amounts to a powerful 4x 20 watts. Beat has a telephone connection for a hands-free car kit and can be operated from the switches on the steering wheel. In addition, the basic device also offers the possibility for connecting an external storage medium such as an MP3 player or iPod through the 3.5 mm line-in plug connection positioned on the central tunnel next to the handbrake.
The high-quality audio unit, Dance, has all of the functions of the Beat system but, in 2-DIN format, is considerably larger with its integrated CD player with MP3 and the digital signal processor with the equalizer. In addition, Dance helps when parking: when manoeuvring, the distances registered by the parking sensors are transmitted and shown on the display. The display shows the determined optically. The six-CD autochanger can be combined with either of the audio systems and is located below the glove compartment on the front passenger side.
The operating switches next to the steering wheel combine volume setting and station choice for the radio and, in addition, can be employed as remote control for the mobile telephone.
The navigation system in 2-DIN format has a large monochromatic dot display (217x75 dots) and provides dynamic GPS navigation through TMC - the system processes traffic messages and alters the route being followed to suit the current information on traffic conditions. In addition to the arrow screen display, the driver also receives information on the route to be taken in spoken form.
On request, Škoda offers preparation for the navigation system, ViaMichelin, directly from production. This includes the wiring with the appropriate power supply and integration into the network.
SAFETY
The new Fabia protects not only its occupants but also other road users with its extensive, modern safety systems. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is standard equipment across the European Union, in all other countries it is a standard part of the top level engine versions, the 1.9 TDI PD and 1.4 TDI PD/59 kW with DPF for the so-called world model specification. In addition, Škoda Auto offers the stability program (ESP) for all models with the exception of the basic 1.2 HTP/44 kW (60 HP). In the most powerful petrol engine version, the 1.6 16V with automatic transmission, ESP is part of the standard equipment included. Also standard is the engine drag torque control which prevents unfavourable influences in drive power in dangerous situations and the Dual Rate Brake Assistant, a mechanical aid which generates maximum brake pressure immediately in the case of an emergency braking situation, thus drastically reducing the braking distance.
Also available is the anti-spin regulation, ASR, which prevents wheel spin in, providing traction when on a smooth surface. In this way, traction is kept within the limits of the friction grip. Extra active safety is also provided by the additional use of the electronic differential lock (EDL) which is combined with a hydraulic brake assistant. The tyre pressure monitoring system, TPM, is also available for use in the new Skoda Fabia. TPM informs the driver immediately of any loss in pressure.
The headlights of the new Skoda Fabia also ensure safety. There are the curve halogen projector headlights which illuminate the road surface in the direction in which the car is travelling. The headlights rotate at different angles in the direction of the corner being taken. In this manner, oncoming traffic is not blinded and the best possible illumination of the curve is ensured. In addition, Škoda also offers the cornering front fog-lights in the new Skoda Fabia so that, depending upon the direction in which the car turns, the left or the right fog lamp is activated, illuminating a wide area of 60° next to the car. In this way, pedestrians and cyclists are more easily seen. This cornering light function operates at speeds of up to 40 km/h.
There are six airbags in the new Skoda Fabia. In addition to the two front airbags, side airbags protect the occupants in the case of a side collision. As an option, head airbags are also offered in which the airbag expands like a curtain along the window surfaces, effectively preventing the occupant's head from making direct contact with the hard surface of the glass or the B pillars. Isofix mountings for children's seats are available for the rear seats. The front passenger's airbag can be deactivated to enable the fitting and safe transport of a babyseat. The rear seats of the new Skoda Fabia are also prepared for mounting a child's seat by means of the Top Tether belt which, after being attached to the rear of the seat, forms a further mounting point on the child's seat. This limits the movement of the upper part of the seat in the case of a direct head-on collision. The safety equipment for the new Fabia thus offers comprehensive protection for all of the occupants and bundles many state-of-the-art technologies available today into an effective package.
But the new Skoda Fabia also provides people outside of the car with a level of protection. Pedestrian safety was also a major target in the development of the new Skoda Fabia. The bonnet and front bumper are designed in such a way that they deform on impact and absorb energy. This in turn reduces the risk of injury to the pedestrian.
The bodywork of the new Skoda Fabia has passed its crash tests, including a comprehensive test range at the new test facility in Mladá Boleslav. The use of different material strengths and differing degrees of rigidity on the part of individual construction elements lead to a planned, energy-absorbing deformation of the bodywork and to the distribution of the impact forces across the entire bodywork structure. In the most ambitious range of tests to date, the Skoda Fabia has survived a crash at a speed of 64 km/h against the 40 % barrier, after which the doors could still be opened without problem. The load values placed upon occupants measured with a new generation of dummies remained well below the specified values in all of the tests. The aforementioned measures create a good prerequisite for a positive evaluation in independent tests for passive safety, such as Euro NCAP.
ENGINES
Low operating costs, low fuel consumption - the range of engine possibilities in the new Skoda Fabia is designed to cater for the needs of customers and leaves practically no wish unfulfilled. In total, there are seven different engines to choose from, four petrol and three diesel engines. No one engine is bound to a specific level of equipment so that the most powerful engine can be combined with the basic level of equipment or the entry-level engine with the top level. The well proven front-wheel drive is, as in the case of its predecessor, the guarantee for safe driving characteristics.
The well proven, thrifty three-cylinder 1.2 litre engine has been further optimised for increased power and torque, now providing either 44 kW or 51 kW (60 HP and 70 HP). The modern aluminium engines with chain drive are characterised by their low fuel consumption and low degree of internal friction. In the new Skoda Fabia excellent acceleration and top speeds of 155 to 161 km/h are the result. Naturally, both engines already fulfil Euro 4 emission standards. For markets with poorer quality of fuels, special applications are offered for safe operation.
The 1.4 litre petrol engine with its 63 kW (86 HP) excels as a result of its smooth running properties and powerful torque of 132 Nm at only 3800 rpm. New in the range is the 1.6 litre aluminium petrol engine which with its 77 kW (105 HP) and a convincing torque of 153 Nm accelerating the new Skoda Fabia from 0 to 100 km/h in only 10.1 seconds.
The three-cylinder 1.4 litre TDI diesel engines are offered in 51 and 59 kW (70 / 80 HP) versions, with the more powerful version having a diesel particle filter as an optional extra. Both engines with their carbon dioxide emission values of 120 g/km and 127 g/km respectively fall well below the limiting value of 140 g/km to be reached within the scope of the ACEA self-imposed obligation by 2008. The excellent torques of 155 and 195 Nm throughout a wide range of revs make possible good acceleration and quick reaction when overtaking.
The strongest diesel engine in the range, the 1.9 litre 77 kW (105 HP) is a smooth running four-cylinder which is also offered with a diesel particle filter as an option. Maximum torque of 240 Nm is achieved at a figure of 1800 rpm and remains constant throughout a wide range of revs. This in turn provides good elasticity and excellent acceleration properties.
Powerful basis with exceptional economy: the 1.2 HTP/44 kW
Even the entry-level engine version of the new Skoda Fabia packs a powerful punch. The three-cylinder supplies 44 kW (60 HP;, its torque peak of 108 Nm is achieved at a figure as low as 3000 rpm.This is sufficient to accelerate the Skoda Fabia from 0 to 100 km/h in 16.5 seconds. The top speed with this engine is 155 km/h. The smooth running three-cylinder petrol engine consumes a moderate 5.9 litres of petrol for a distance of 100 kilometres and the 45-litre fuel tank gives it a driving range of some 770 kilometres.
A healthy balance: the 1.2 12V HTP/51 kW
This second version of the innovative three-cylinder engine provides 51 kW (70 HP). The highest torque of 112 Nm is reached at a figure of 3000 rpm enabling the Fabia to be accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 14.9 seconds and to reach a top speed of 163 km/h. But even the more powerful engine remains conservative as far as fuel consumption is concerned, requiring only 5.9 litres of petrol for 100 kilometres according to EU measurement standards and, in spite of the additional power, is every bit as thrifty as the basic version.
Powerful in performance: the 1.4 16V/63 kW
With the next more powerful version, the 63 kW (86 HP), the mid range version, the Skoda Fabia provides considerable driving power from the 1.4-litre, four-cylinder engine. The highest torque of 132 Nm is achieved here at 3800 rpm and the optimised power package supplies the new Skoda Fabia with its top speed of 174 km/h, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in only 12.3 seconds. As far as consumption is concerned, the four-cylinder is extremely frugal, requiring only 6.5 litres for the 100 kilometre stretch according to standard measurement procedure.
With sporting ambitions: the 1.6 16V/77 kW
The top engine performer in the new Fabia is provided by the 77 kW (105 HP) 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, which reaches its torque peak of 153 Nm at 3800 rpm. With only 10.1 seconds required to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, the most powerful of the petrol engines is of a thoroughly sporty nature. A top speed of 190 km/h is noteworthy for a small car. In spite of its performance potential, the four-cylinder machine proves very reticent in its consumption, requiring only 6.9 litres for 100 kilometres (provisional value). In combination with the new six-gear automatic transmission, its driving performance and fuel consumption values change slightly, requiring 11.5 seconds for the standard sprint, the top speed reaches 185 km/h and standard consumption is 7.6 litres for 100 kilometres (provisional value).
Small diesel with plenty of power: the 1.4 TDI PD/51 kW
The basic engine version in the diesel range is the 51 kW (70 HP) powerful three-cylinder with a displacement of 1.4 litres. It excels as a result of its excellent economy, with its combined consumption of a mere 4.8 litres for 100 kilometres and the 45-litre tank makes the car a rare guest at filling stations which the driver only has to visit after some 940 kilometres. Enhanced by the turbocharger, this engine provides the new Skoda Fabia with very pleasant driving performance. It requires 14.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, reaching a top speed of 163 km/h. The maximum torque of 155 Nm is reached between 1600 rpm and 2800 rpm, so that even the smallest diesel can be moved speedily without exaggerated gear changing.
On request, with filter: the 1.4 TDI PD/59 kW
The performance upgraded version of the three-cylinder diesel reaches 59 kW (80 HP) and a torque peak of a good 195 Nm at 2200 rpm. Top speed is 172 km/h and 13.2 seconds are required for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h. The machine requires a mere 4.6 litres of fuel for the 100 kilometre stretch. This engine can, as an option, be fitted out with a diesel particle filter, which increases the consumption a little. The 1.4 TDI PD nevertheless remains clearly below the figure of five litres per 100 kilometres.
Sovereign in all driving conditions: the 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW
The top engine version in the diesel range is the 1.9-litre four cylinder machine. It has torque of 240 Nm at 1800 rpm and requires a mere 10.8 seconds for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h. The Skoda Fabia powered in this manner reaches a top speed of 190 km/h while exhibiting admirable long-distance qualities with a consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres, which has a pleasant effect on the fuel budget. The option of a diesel particle filter is also available for the top-of-the-range engine and the additional consumption of 0.2 litres per 100 kilometres remains moderate.
All Fabias are supplied with an extended maintenance interval system (WIV), which permits up to 30,000 kilometres of driving before the instrument display requests the driver to call in at the workshop for service. Sensors constantly record data on oil temperature, speed, driving profile, and distance driven, enabling the computer to determine the ideal time at which the service should be carried out. With a conservative driving style, the Skoda Fabia driver not only saves money, but also time, thanks to the extended maintenance intervals.
As an option, the most powerful Skoda Fabia petrol engine can be combined with a six-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the standard automatic function, this transmission is also equipped with Tiptronic making it possible for sequential manual gear shifting.
CHASSIS
The front wheels of the new Skoda Fabia are fitted with McPherson struts. The front axle is mounted on a three-part sub frame which decouples the bodywork from the chassis, thus drastically reducing vibration and noise. At the rear, a semi-independent suspension reduces weight and makes a payload of an amount of 515 kilograms possible. The new Fabia is designed with a slight understeer so that it reaches a high degree of stability and safety in cornering.
The new Skoda Fabia is equipped with an electro-hydraulic power steering. This enables hydraulic support to be provided exactly when needed. By means of this system, driving straight ahead requires less fuel consumption than in the case of conventional power steering and simultaneously provides the necessary power support depending on the driving situation involved. The new Fabia is offered with ESP for the versions in the 51 kW range and higher, as an option.
In spite of its modest growth in size and an improved standard specification, the new Skoda Fabia is scarcely heavier than its predecessor. The overall length has increased by 22 mm to 3992 mm and its height by 47 mm to 1498 mm. The width of the vehicle remains practically unchanged at 1642 mm. In spite of all this, the basic 1.2 HTP model is 5 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. There are practically no limitations involved when on a journey or when transporting articles in the new Skoda Fabia. The vehicle payload for all EU models is a uniform 515 kilograms, a truly record-breaking value. The boot capacity is 300 litres in volume when the rear seats are in place and when folded down, the capacity increases to 1163 litres.
Skoda Fabia
The new Skoda Fabia's dimensions makes it ideally suited to town driving. The greatest increase in size in the Skoda Fabia is found where it adds comfort and doesn't compromise handling. The total increase in length amounts to 22 mm and has been created by the measures involving pedestrian protection in the front bumper and modifications to the rear bumper. These have led to a more favourable classification in insurance ratings. The increased height is mainly intended to improve the space available in the interior. Seating conditions, especially in the rear, are correspondingly much more comfortable. The driver and front passenger, for example, now sit 30 mm higher than in the first generation Skoda Fabia, affording a better view of the road. Once again Škoda Auto underlines its claim of building "simply clever" automobiles.
Parallels to the Roomster
The new Skoda Fabia follows the new Škoda Auto design ethos first demonstrated with the Škoda Roomster. Characteristic of this is the trademark radiator grille, which is now even more sculptured the large headlights reach far back into the front wings, and the stylish and clearly visible indicator lights not only create the prerequisites for safety but also give the Skoda Fabia an exceptional characteristic trait. The expressive profile of the vehicle also originates from the grille, extending along the vehicle above both doors to the rear. This character line is typical of the new five-door compact car from Škoda.
Always a good rear view: here, the function is the result of the form
In comparison to its predecessor, the rear window has become considerably larger, making the Skoda Fabia appear more spacious. In addition, this improves visibility considerably, and together with the large external rear mirrors, the new Skoda Fabia offers its driver an exceptionally good view. The rear lights are now more pronounced and sporty. In addition, they have been installed at a higher level, making them visible for the following traffic. The fact that they are mounted higher minimises the extent to which the rear lights are dirtied by unclean road surfaces, a fact which was evidenced in wind tunnel tests during the development.
The expression of an individual and more sporting orientation in the new Skoda Fabia is the exceptional new paintwork option for the roof. With this option, Fabia customers can choose a white roof, an element that will doubtless add to the car's appeal. In combination with selected external colours, the Skoda Fabia, thanks to the contrast of the roof, will look more striking than ever before.

A GREAT DEAL MORE: THE FABIA IS THE MOST SPACIOUS CAR IN ITS CLASS
The new Skoda Fabia is heading for the starting line with several records. It offers its occupants the largest knee and head space in this segment. And, in addition, it is the best in its class in boot space. When the rear seats are folded down the boot provides 1,163 litres of luggage space and with all 5 seats occupied, 300 litres of luggage space, giving it one of the largest boots in its class. This volume simply underlines the fact that comfort and space were of the highest priority in designing the interior.
Emotional but nevertheless with a high degree of functionality, interior design in the new Skoda Fabia is a success. The logical and self-explanatory operating concept and the ergonomic positioning of the controls in combination with carefully selected materials lead to a high-quality feel inside the cabin. All of the surfaces are constructed of or coated with materials that are pleasant to the touch and exhibit an excellent optical impression so that everyone will love the feel of the new Skoda Fabia. Thanks to the careful choice of high-quality materials and the generous amount of interior space the occupants in the Skoda Fabia feel as if they are in a vehicle of a higher class.
More emphasis has been placed on the design of the interior than was the case in the first generation Skoda Fabia. The twin-coloured instrument panel design with its storage compartments and spaces, aux-in socket, cup holder, etc, the design of the functional elements and fittings of a high standard make the Skoda Fabia more than just a practical car for daily use. It affords the car style and charm, paired with the simply clever fittings which are always found in a true Škoda.
In comparison to the first generation, the new Skoda Fabia offers much more comfort in daily driving. The boot is practical not only as a result of its exceptional capacity. The boot cover can be positioned at two different levels, which increases the variability even further. Further innovations are the armrest between the front seats adjustable in angle; the holder for 1.5 litre bottles in the front doors and the storage space for spectacles in the roof. There are three different steering wheels available for the Skoda Fabia. The basic model is equipped with a four-spoke steering wheel of a polyurethane plastic that is pleasant to the touch. On request, a leather coated steering wheel with four spokes can be supplied, while the sports version has a three-spoke leather-wrapped sports steering wheel. Leather steering wheels are always part and parcel of the small leather package which also includes the gear knob and gaiter, as well as the handbrake handle.
The safe and comfortable operation of the mobile phone and audio system via the new multi-function module on the steering wheel is already well known from the Roomster. This allows the radio to be operated, including radio station choice or volume control, without taking your hands from the steering wheel. In the case of versions equipped with a built-in hands-free phone system. The major mobile phone functions can be carried out remotely from the steering wheel.
In the centre console, the controls of the optionally available, electronically controlled Climatronic air-conditioning is located below the generous air vents which can be set exactly as required. This automatically ensures that the pre-programmed temperature in the interior of the car is constantly maintained. Below this, there is the audio system; two different radios - Beat and Dance - are available for the Skoda Fabia. As an optional extra a navigation system is available. Instructions are given in spoken form and also in the Maxi-DOT Display which displays the same information as the audio unit. The optional 6-CD autochanger is installed under the glove compartment in the lower part of the dashboard and ensures rapid access as well as easy changing.
Occupants of the Skoda Fabia will find their correct seat position without any effort whatsoever thanks to the generous adjustment possibilities. By means of the precise adjustment for the steering wheel which can be adjusted for both reach and rake, the driver can very easily find the best seating position. Even better stability is found in the optional sports seats. Bolsters on the base and back provide more support in curves even when a sporty driving style is chosen. As an option, there is also a partial leather interior, in which the seats are upholstered in a combination of leather, artificial leather and fabric. An adjustable armrest between the front seats is installed as standard in the range of fittings for the Elegance, making travelling in the Skoda Fabia even more pleasant.
There are a large number of storage facilities in the Skoda Fabia. A storage space on the left below the steering wheel is part of the standard equipment and there are holders for large bottles of up to 1.5 litres in the doors. Further, smaller integrated storage spaces are found in the dashboard, while storage in the centre console with its slip-proof base provides space for items in daily use and the rear of the front seats contain large pockets for magazines or travel guides can be easily stored. The rear seatbacks can be folded forward to provide an increase in the boot space of up to 1,163 litres. In the basic version, the Classic, the back of the rear seat is a single unit while in all other versions it is 60:40. This in turn creates an almost completely level loading surface. Between the wheel housings, the loading space measures 958 mm. The length of the boot measures 703 mm or 1383 mm when the seats in the rear are forward folded. The height from the floor to the boot cover amounts to 525 mm and to 278 mm when the boot cover set in lower position. The boot cover can be set at two different heights, varying the boot capacity. It can either be installed flush with the upper edge of the rear seat back or some 10 cms lower in a special second mounting provided for this purpose. Instead of the recessed grip normally provided in the inside of the rear door, Škoda provides a much more functional solution - a handle making it easier to pull down the tailgate.
As an option, the new Skoda Fabia can also be equipped with a large tilting sun roof. The glass window makes the interior bright and friendly. In the event that the sun's rays become too strong, the glass roof can be covered with a sliding hood. Four grab handles, two jacket hooks at the rear, two reading lights and a makeup mirror in the sun visor are supplied in the Overhead Package I which is offered for the Ambiente, Sport and Elegance versions. To protect the car against theft, Škoda also offers an alarm unit. The combination of interior monitoring and an inclination sensor reacts not only when an attempt is made to break into the car but also when an attempt is made to tow the car away or load it onto another vehicle.
EQUIPMENT
The new Skoda Fabia presents a wide variety of equipment with four different trim levels. Each of these have carefully compiled and coordinated safety and comfort properties, while a comprehensive choice of optional equipment makes it possible for the Skoda Fabia owner to achieve a high level of individuality. Curve halogen projector headlights and cornering front fog-lights, cruise control, a cooled glove compartment and a high-class audio system with an integrated navigation system or a mobile navigation system in cooperation with ViaMichelin, numerous other optional extras are available.
The basis is formed by the Classic, where emphasis has been placed on maximum functionality and safety at a favourable price. The higher trim levels - the Ambiente, Sport and Elegance - offer additional elements of comfort and, in addition, cater for the different wishes of customers with their particular interiors and exteriors.

In the Classic, Ambiente and Sport versions, the new Fabia runs on the comfort-oriented wheels of 13" and 14" and on the sporty 15" dimensions. The attractive wheel covers are specially designed to suit the design of the model. For the petrol models there are the 13" (wheel cover: PLUTO) or 14" steel wheels available (wheel covers: DRACO and CASTOR). 15" steel wheels (wheel cover HERMES) are standard for vehicles with a 1.9 TDI PD diesel engine and for all Skoda Fabia Sport versions. The Fabia Elegance has alloy wheels as a standard. In the case of the petrol engine versions and the three-cylinder diesel engine versions, 14" wheels in ATIK design are standard, while the 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW (105 HP) diesel engine is supplied with 6.0J x 15" ANTARES alloy wheels. In addition, there are numerous choices in the alloy wheel programme.
Fine differentiation: design dependent upon the equipment
The differently equipped versions of the new Škoda Fabia do not only differ in the amount of equipment provided. The higher equipment versions, Ambiente, Sport and Elegance, also differ in design as a result of the more elaborate details. For example, the base model has black exterior mirrors and door handles; in the higher versions, these components are body-coloured the upper trim and frame of the radiator grille is chromed, while the A-pillar cover emphasises the cockpit design. In line with this, the B-pillars are also in black. B-pillars on the basic version, to co-ordinate with the black mirrors and door handles, have a matt finish, whilst the B-pillars in the Ambiente, Sport and Elegance are finished in gloss black.
Similar to the manner in which the basic and higher trim levels differ in their exteriors, the execution of the interior of the Škoda Fabia is also suited to its equipment level. Even in the entry-level version, two different interior colour schemes are available. The Classic is supplied with the Onyx/Onyx dashboard. In this, there are two open glove compartments on the front passenger's side. The surrounds of the air vents, gearshift and the handbrake button are executed in black. In the case of the higher-level versions, the glove compartments have lids and individual details of the interior are optically highlighted with a silver-coloured surround. In total, there are nine different upholstery designs and partial leather interior and high-quality sports upholstery are offered as options.
Your own favourite programme: the optional equipment
The range of optional equipment offered in the new Fabia is very comprehensive. Most of the elements can be ordered separately and without having to be combined with another item. A large number of possibilities are thus created, giving each Skoda Fabia its own individual character suited to its owner's tastes. The list also contains a number of exceptional details which are completely new in this class of vehicle and many of them are being offered for the first time ever in the Skoda Fabia range. These include such things as the halogen projector headlights with their rotating headlight function, the front fog lights with the cornering light function or tyre pressure monitoring (TPM).
In comparison to the first generation, the new Skoda Fabia offers some completely new safety standards, such as head airbags which protect front seat occupants in the event of a side impact. Among the further innovations are electronically controlled air-conditioning, Climatronic, the GSM telephone preparation with Bluetooth technology, the switches for the operation of the audio unit and mobile phones next to the steering wheel or audio units with the possibility of connecting an MP3 player or an iPod via the aux-in connection in the centre console.
Good sound with information: the audio and navigation systems
The entertainment and information system in the new Skoda Fabia is based on what has already proven its worth: the audio and navigation systems are in line with those offered in the Škoda Roomster. The styling is integrated into the instrument panel and the interior as a whole. This not only enhances the aesthetic value of the interior, but simultaneously reduces the risk of theft. The electronic coding for the radio is also designed to act as an additional form of security. The offer in infotainment systems for the Škoda Fabia consists of two different radios, a separate CD changer and a navigation device with arrow direction display.
The Beat car radio is the basic system for the new Škoda Fabia. It is in 1 DIN format and receives both AM and FM as well as being fitted out with an RDS function. The CD changer can be controlled from the radio and amplifier power amounts to a powerful 4x 20 watts. Beat has a telephone connection for a hands-free car kit and can be operated from the switches on the steering wheel. In addition, the basic device also offers the possibility for connecting an external storage medium such as an MP3 player or iPod through the 3.5 mm line-in plug connection positioned on the central tunnel next to the handbrake.
The high-quality audio unit, Dance, has all of the functions of the Beat system but, in 2-DIN format, is considerably larger with its integrated CD player with MP3 and the digital signal processor with the equalizer. In addition, Dance helps when parking: when manoeuvring, the distances registered by the parking sensors are transmitted and shown on the display. The display shows the determined optically. The six-CD autochanger can be combined with either of the audio systems and is located below the glove compartment on the front passenger side.
The operating switches next to the steering wheel combine volume setting and station choice for the radio and, in addition, can be employed as remote control for the mobile telephone.
The navigation system in 2-DIN format has a large monochromatic dot display (217x75 dots) and provides dynamic GPS navigation through TMC - the system processes traffic messages and alters the route being followed to suit the current information on traffic conditions. In addition to the arrow screen display, the driver also receives information on the route to be taken in spoken form.
On request, Škoda offers preparation for the navigation system, ViaMichelin, directly from production. This includes the wiring with the appropriate power supply and integration into the network.
SAFETY
The new Fabia protects not only its occupants but also other road users with its extensive, modern safety systems. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is standard equipment across the European Union, in all other countries it is a standard part of the top level engine versions, the 1.9 TDI PD and 1.4 TDI PD/59 kW with DPF for the so-called world model specification. In addition, Škoda Auto offers the stability program (ESP) for all models with the exception of the basic 1.2 HTP/44 kW (60 HP). In the most powerful petrol engine version, the 1.6 16V with automatic transmission, ESP is part of the standard equipment included. Also standard is the engine drag torque control which prevents unfavourable influences in drive power in dangerous situations and the Dual Rate Brake Assistant, a mechanical aid which generates maximum brake pressure immediately in the case of an emergency braking situation, thus drastically reducing the braking distance.
Also available is the anti-spin regulation, ASR, which prevents wheel spin in, providing traction when on a smooth surface. In this way, traction is kept within the limits of the friction grip. Extra active safety is also provided by the additional use of the electronic differential lock (EDL) which is combined with a hydraulic brake assistant. The tyre pressure monitoring system, TPM, is also available for use in the new Skoda Fabia. TPM informs the driver immediately of any loss in pressure.
The headlights of the new Skoda Fabia also ensure safety. There are the curve halogen projector headlights which illuminate the road surface in the direction in which the car is travelling. The headlights rotate at different angles in the direction of the corner being taken. In this manner, oncoming traffic is not blinded and the best possible illumination of the curve is ensured. In addition, Škoda also offers the cornering front fog-lights in the new Skoda Fabia so that, depending upon the direction in which the car turns, the left or the right fog lamp is activated, illuminating a wide area of 60° next to the car. In this way, pedestrians and cyclists are more easily seen. This cornering light function operates at speeds of up to 40 km/h.
There are six airbags in the new Skoda Fabia. In addition to the two front airbags, side airbags protect the occupants in the case of a side collision. As an option, head airbags are also offered in which the airbag expands like a curtain along the window surfaces, effectively preventing the occupant's head from making direct contact with the hard surface of the glass or the B pillars. Isofix mountings for children's seats are available for the rear seats. The front passenger's airbag can be deactivated to enable the fitting and safe transport of a babyseat. The rear seats of the new Skoda Fabia are also prepared for mounting a child's seat by means of the Top Tether belt which, after being attached to the rear of the seat, forms a further mounting point on the child's seat. This limits the movement of the upper part of the seat in the case of a direct head-on collision. The safety equipment for the new Fabia thus offers comprehensive protection for all of the occupants and bundles many state-of-the-art technologies available today into an effective package.
But the new Skoda Fabia also provides people outside of the car with a level of protection. Pedestrian safety was also a major target in the development of the new Skoda Fabia. The bonnet and front bumper are designed in such a way that they deform on impact and absorb energy. This in turn reduces the risk of injury to the pedestrian.
The bodywork of the new Skoda Fabia has passed its crash tests, including a comprehensive test range at the new test facility in Mladá Boleslav. The use of different material strengths and differing degrees of rigidity on the part of individual construction elements lead to a planned, energy-absorbing deformation of the bodywork and to the distribution of the impact forces across the entire bodywork structure. In the most ambitious range of tests to date, the Skoda Fabia has survived a crash at a speed of 64 km/h against the 40 % barrier, after which the doors could still be opened without problem. The load values placed upon occupants measured with a new generation of dummies remained well below the specified values in all of the tests. The aforementioned measures create a good prerequisite for a positive evaluation in independent tests for passive safety, such as Euro NCAP.
ENGINES
Low operating costs, low fuel consumption - the range of engine possibilities in the new Skoda Fabia is designed to cater for the needs of customers and leaves practically no wish unfulfilled. In total, there are seven different engines to choose from, four petrol and three diesel engines. No one engine is bound to a specific level of equipment so that the most powerful engine can be combined with the basic level of equipment or the entry-level engine with the top level. The well proven front-wheel drive is, as in the case of its predecessor, the guarantee for safe driving characteristics.
The well proven, thrifty three-cylinder 1.2 litre engine has been further optimised for increased power and torque, now providing either 44 kW or 51 kW (60 HP and 70 HP). The modern aluminium engines with chain drive are characterised by their low fuel consumption and low degree of internal friction. In the new Skoda Fabia excellent acceleration and top speeds of 155 to 161 km/h are the result. Naturally, both engines already fulfil Euro 4 emission standards. For markets with poorer quality of fuels, special applications are offered for safe operation.
The 1.4 litre petrol engine with its 63 kW (86 HP) excels as a result of its smooth running properties and powerful torque of 132 Nm at only 3800 rpm. New in the range is the 1.6 litre aluminium petrol engine which with its 77 kW (105 HP) and a convincing torque of 153 Nm accelerating the new Skoda Fabia from 0 to 100 km/h in only 10.1 seconds.
The three-cylinder 1.4 litre TDI diesel engines are offered in 51 and 59 kW (70 / 80 HP) versions, with the more powerful version having a diesel particle filter as an optional extra. Both engines with their carbon dioxide emission values of 120 g/km and 127 g/km respectively fall well below the limiting value of 140 g/km to be reached within the scope of the ACEA self-imposed obligation by 2008. The excellent torques of 155 and 195 Nm throughout a wide range of revs make possible good acceleration and quick reaction when overtaking.
The strongest diesel engine in the range, the 1.9 litre 77 kW (105 HP) is a smooth running four-cylinder which is also offered with a diesel particle filter as an option. Maximum torque of 240 Nm is achieved at a figure of 1800 rpm and remains constant throughout a wide range of revs. This in turn provides good elasticity and excellent acceleration properties.
Powerful basis with exceptional economy: the 1.2 HTP/44 kW
Even the entry-level engine version of the new Skoda Fabia packs a powerful punch. The three-cylinder supplies 44 kW (60 HP;, its torque peak of 108 Nm is achieved at a figure as low as 3000 rpm.This is sufficient to accelerate the Skoda Fabia from 0 to 100 km/h in 16.5 seconds. The top speed with this engine is 155 km/h. The smooth running three-cylinder petrol engine consumes a moderate 5.9 litres of petrol for a distance of 100 kilometres and the 45-litre fuel tank gives it a driving range of some 770 kilometres.
A healthy balance: the 1.2 12V HTP/51 kW
This second version of the innovative three-cylinder engine provides 51 kW (70 HP). The highest torque of 112 Nm is reached at a figure of 3000 rpm enabling the Fabia to be accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 14.9 seconds and to reach a top speed of 163 km/h. But even the more powerful engine remains conservative as far as fuel consumption is concerned, requiring only 5.9 litres of petrol for 100 kilometres according to EU measurement standards and, in spite of the additional power, is every bit as thrifty as the basic version.
Powerful in performance: the 1.4 16V/63 kW
With the next more powerful version, the 63 kW (86 HP), the mid range version, the Skoda Fabia provides considerable driving power from the 1.4-litre, four-cylinder engine. The highest torque of 132 Nm is achieved here at 3800 rpm and the optimised power package supplies the new Skoda Fabia with its top speed of 174 km/h, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in only 12.3 seconds. As far as consumption is concerned, the four-cylinder is extremely frugal, requiring only 6.5 litres for the 100 kilometre stretch according to standard measurement procedure.
With sporting ambitions: the 1.6 16V/77 kW
The top engine performer in the new Fabia is provided by the 77 kW (105 HP) 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, which reaches its torque peak of 153 Nm at 3800 rpm. With only 10.1 seconds required to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, the most powerful of the petrol engines is of a thoroughly sporty nature. A top speed of 190 km/h is noteworthy for a small car. In spite of its performance potential, the four-cylinder machine proves very reticent in its consumption, requiring only 6.9 litres for 100 kilometres (provisional value). In combination with the new six-gear automatic transmission, its driving performance and fuel consumption values change slightly, requiring 11.5 seconds for the standard sprint, the top speed reaches 185 km/h and standard consumption is 7.6 litres for 100 kilometres (provisional value).
Small diesel with plenty of power: the 1.4 TDI PD/51 kW
The basic engine version in the diesel range is the 51 kW (70 HP) powerful three-cylinder with a displacement of 1.4 litres. It excels as a result of its excellent economy, with its combined consumption of a mere 4.8 litres for 100 kilometres and the 45-litre tank makes the car a rare guest at filling stations which the driver only has to visit after some 940 kilometres. Enhanced by the turbocharger, this engine provides the new Skoda Fabia with very pleasant driving performance. It requires 14.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, reaching a top speed of 163 km/h. The maximum torque of 155 Nm is reached between 1600 rpm and 2800 rpm, so that even the smallest diesel can be moved speedily without exaggerated gear changing.
On request, with filter: the 1.4 TDI PD/59 kW
The performance upgraded version of the three-cylinder diesel reaches 59 kW (80 HP) and a torque peak of a good 195 Nm at 2200 rpm. Top speed is 172 km/h and 13.2 seconds are required for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h. The machine requires a mere 4.6 litres of fuel for the 100 kilometre stretch. This engine can, as an option, be fitted out with a diesel particle filter, which increases the consumption a little. The 1.4 TDI PD nevertheless remains clearly below the figure of five litres per 100 kilometres.
Sovereign in all driving conditions: the 1.9 TDI PD/77 kW
The top engine version in the diesel range is the 1.9-litre four cylinder machine. It has torque of 240 Nm at 1800 rpm and requires a mere 10.8 seconds for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h. The Skoda Fabia powered in this manner reaches a top speed of 190 km/h while exhibiting admirable long-distance qualities with a consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres, which has a pleasant effect on the fuel budget. The option of a diesel particle filter is also available for the top-of-the-range engine and the additional consumption of 0.2 litres per 100 kilometres remains moderate.
All Fabias are supplied with an extended maintenance interval system (WIV), which permits up to 30,000 kilometres of driving before the instrument display requests the driver to call in at the workshop for service. Sensors constantly record data on oil temperature, speed, driving profile, and distance driven, enabling the computer to determine the ideal time at which the service should be carried out. With a conservative driving style, the Skoda Fabia driver not only saves money, but also time, thanks to the extended maintenance intervals.
As an option, the most powerful Skoda Fabia petrol engine can be combined with a six-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the standard automatic function, this transmission is also equipped with Tiptronic making it possible for sequential manual gear shifting.
CHASSIS
The front wheels of the new Skoda Fabia are fitted with McPherson struts. The front axle is mounted on a three-part sub frame which decouples the bodywork from the chassis, thus drastically reducing vibration and noise. At the rear, a semi-independent suspension reduces weight and makes a payload of an amount of 515 kilograms possible. The new Fabia is designed with a slight understeer so that it reaches a high degree of stability and safety in cornering.
The new Skoda Fabia is equipped with an electro-hydraulic power steering. This enables hydraulic support to be provided exactly when needed. By means of this system, driving straight ahead requires less fuel consumption than in the case of conventional power steering and simultaneously provides the necessary power support depending on the driving situation involved. The new Fabia is offered with ESP for the versions in the 51 kW range and higher, as an option.
